A Nuba man from southern Sudan

Photographer: Leni Riefenstahl, 1977

The Nuba people are famous for their elaborate body art. Designs on the body are beautiful, but they also have social meanings, indicating age, marital and social status, and group identity.

Nuba scarification begins in childhood, with the shallow cutting of skin in patterns. Ash is rubbed into the cuts to form raised scars. Patterns decorating the body are rich in symbolism. This personal art form is being lost due to years of civil war, which has disrupted or destroyed cultural practices.
